Why Science Works

Science is undoubtedly the greatest weapon the human race has ever had. If you have problem with admitting that fact,  I suppose you should wonder how we came about your smartphone or the laptop in front of you or how we come about the internet. Frankly, those are even just a very little out of many things science has thrown our way.

Science has been here for ages, as far back as the days of Aristotle. It studies everything that is, giving us answers to most of the instinctive - due to our inherent curiosity - questions that comes to our minds as we try to understand every thing or phenomena that exist. And it does that, by describing the nature or behavior of every thing or phenomena using natural laws and theories.

Richard Feynman made that statement in one of his lectures.

However, I have personally seen people, being skeptic or far worse, being kind of cynic about science, despite its obvious great impact in the human society at large. Such individuals hold  notions like science can't explain everything, it is not real or even go as far as alleging established scientific facts and discoveries to be rubbish or nonsense. And unapologetically, these notions arise due to the influence of beliefs - cultural or religious, as the case may be.

Mind you, science doesn't - with intent - aim to attack beliefs as it doesn't even care. Science works based on a kind of decentralized system. It's doesn't care who you are, scientist, non- scientist or what you believe. In a simple and understandable manner, here's how science works:

  - You identify a problem or ask question

  - Propose the possible solution or answer

  - Test your proposition by experiment

  - If it agrees with experiment, cool! If it doesn't, thrash it!

NB: The proposed solution or answer is called (Scientific) Theory which must be backed by observable evidence(s) and testable. It can even be mathematical evidences.

So, why science works? It works because it's decentralized, works based on generally accepted rules, and it laws can be tested, retested and reconfirmed. If Albert Einstein's theories of relativity disagree with experiments today, boom! We thrash it! Yes, it's Einstein...but let go that shit! Science doesn't care as long as it doesn't agree with experiment.

With this, Science has been the greatest weapon we can ever have. You can always go into the laboratory, do the experiment and see it work, right in front of you. You can always make direct confirmation for yourself, and reconfirm over and over again. Although, you might still decide not to believe the results of the experiments, even after confirming it, no one can crucify you. I mean, that's what is called belief. You have every right to your belief! But it doesn't not change the experimental result and thus, the fact that science works.

Moreover, most of these skeptics or cynics will say, science cannot answer all and has limit. Right, science might not know or understand little, compared to all, of the phenomena around us but it does not mean, it can never give us answers to questions surroundimg these phenomena in the future. Come on, there was a time no one knew about wireless signals. If anyone told your great-grandfather in the past, he could do video call with his friend in another country, would he believe?? He would definitely be skeptical, that's if he doesn't think the person is mad or talking nonsense. There was a time we know very few about the nature of everything but now, we know more than the past and science keeps advancing. The future of Science is unimaginable and unbelievable as it's sporadically advancing. It's just a matter of time and we would have our answers.

To wrap it, science works for everyone, every thing and all that is, as it is testable and confirmable over and over again. To believe or not, is your choice and not for science to worry about. And be informed, that science bears no limit, seeks to solve and answer all questions as in fact, its future is unbelievable.
